Dr Kiran Bedi Inspires the Next Generation of Women Leaders at Ashoka University
On International Women’s Day, Dr Kiran Bedi shared her inspiring journey of courage, leadership, and social impact with the Ashoka community.
Ashoka University had the privilege of hosting Dr Kiran Bedi, a pioneering leader, reformist, and India’s first woman officer in the Indian Police Service, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. In an insightful online session moderated by Jasrita Dhir, Vice President, Brand and Communications, Dr Bedi shared her remarkable journey of breaking barriers, leading with courage, and creating lasting social impact.
Reflecting on her early years, Dr Bedi mentioned that courage is not an innate trait but a quality that grows over time. “You don’t suddenly become courageous overnight; you grow as you grow,” she said. Her experiences, ranging from playing tennis at the national level to navigating the rigid structures of the police force, instilled resilience and a fearless attitude that defined her career.
She credited her liberal upbringing in a family that valued both sports and education, shaping her ability to challenge norms. Encouraging young women to challenge traditional gender roles, she highlighted that true courage comes from perseverance, resilience, and an unshakable sense of purpose.
One of the most thought-provoking segments of the conversation revolved around work-life balance. Dr Bedi challenged the conventional notion of balance, stating that the key lies in convergence, aligning personal and professional aspirations. She urged women to discuss expectations and lifestyles with their partners early on, ensuring that both individuals are aligned in their ambitions and responsibilities. “Marriage is not about giving up; it’s about strengthening each other,” she affirmed.
Further, Dr Bedi stressed that education is the foundation of empowerment, breaking it down into three key pillars: Personal Empowerment, Relational Empowerment, and Social Empowerment. Sharing her work in rural Haryana, she spoke of how education, skill-building, and entrepreneurship had transformed villages, giving women economic independence and the confidence to shape their futures.
Even after decades of service, Dr Bedi remains as dynamic as ever. She continues her work through two active foundations, is mentoring young changemakers, and is involved in writing and speaking engagements. She also revealed that a biopic on her life is in the works, chronicling her journey from the tennis courts to the corridors of power.
Dr Bedi’s journey is not just her own, it is a blueprint for all women who seek to lead, reform, and create lasting change. She continues to empower generations of women to pursue their dreams with confidence.
