Title of the Talk: “Visualizing Stories with Suddhasattwa Basu”

Abstract: Renowned children's book illustrator Suddhasattwa Basu will delve into the critical role of illustration in enhancing narrative comprehension and engagement. On how illustrations can breathe life into narratives, making characters leap off the page and enchanting readers of all ages. Through engaging examples and interactive discussions, Basu will share techniques behind transforming words into vivid imagery. With illustrations from his large body of work, Basu will discuss the cognitive impact of visual storytelling and its implications for literary education. This colloquium aims to provide scholars with a deeper understanding of how illustrations can transform narratives, fostering both critical thinking and creative expression in their own storytelling endeavours. 

Bio of Speaker: As a prolific painter, illustrator and animator for more than fifty years, Suddhasattwa Basu has had a huge influence on children’s literature in India. His work was crucial in shaping the development of children’s publishing in the English language at a time when it was still in its nascent stage. In the 1980s, Basu made significant contributions to the iconic children’s magazine, Target, and later, to the magazine Tamasha. He has illustrated more than sixty books for several leading and many independent publishers in Asia. He has also written and illustrated his own stories, displaying a deep understanding of the play between text and visuals. Suddhasattwa Basu is versatile, both with themes and media, and has worked in pen and ink, water colours, printmaking techniques and animation. He manages to skilfully move between diverse genres and styles. It is this easy versatility that sets Basu apart from many illustrators practising in India today.

Suddhasattwa Basu has set a very high benchmark for young practitioners of illustration and his dedication to his craft is a huge inspiration for those aspiring to illustrate children’s books in India.
