Ph.D. University of MichiganNishita is an economic and political anthropologist with research and teaching interests in the anthropology of finance and banking, anti-colonial movements, and surveillance infrastructures. Her book manuscript, Banking on Uncertainty: Debt and Interdependence in Kashmir, focuses on the Jammu & Kashmir Bank (J&K Bank), a prominent semi-state bank headquartered in Indian-Administered Kashmir. Banking on Uncertainty argues that the J&K Bank provides an important and novel lens through which to rethink Kashmir’s political history and its contemporary politics. The book is based on 22 months of archival research and ethnographic fieldwork (2016-2018) conducted at a large urban branch of the bank in the capital city of Srinagar during and following a large-scale civilian uprising in 2016.
Nishita’s writing has appeared or is forthcoming in the Washington Post, Current Anthropology, Critique of Anthropology, and Cultural Anthropology’s Hot Spot series. Prior to joining Ashoka, Nishita was an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies (2021-2023) and a UCI ADVANCE Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Irvine (2020-2021). She received her Ph.D. in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2020.
